Quantum Information Science (QIS) is a new interdisciplinary STEM field which has grown out of the Second Quantum Revolution, a reconceptualization of quantum mechanics in terms of information theory concepts. The idea is to exploit the property of quantum entanglement, a distinctive feature of quantum mechanics which is now understood to be the key feature of quantum theory that fundamentally distinguishes it from the features of the “classical” world that we can perceive through our senses. We now know that quantum entanglement is a resource which can be used in many different ways. It can be used to perform computations with a speed that can exceed anything possible with a classically-designed and realized system. It can enhance the sensitivity of precision measurements beyond the limit one gets using the usual classical analyses of measurement error. It is now being used to transmit encrypted messages which, by the laws of physics, cannot be spied upon undetected. These features are poised to revolutionize problem solving capabilities in many different STEM fields.
